We finance community development institutions so they can meet the needs of their communities they serve.

Financing the development, redevelopment, and preservation of real estate facilities for a variety of purposes that benefit the community can help ensure a community’s assets build rather than detract from community wealth and strength. A thriving, vibrant neighborhood provides its residents with a diverse array of well-maintained and affordable community assets, including housing, schools, community centers, retail and office space.

Our capital enables communities, mainly through Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs), to develop their own holistic approach to serving local needs and revitalization neighborhoods. Calvert Impact Capital’s strategy is to provide financing for intermediary organizations and funds that finance community real estate across the U.S. These properties provide quality, affordable space for businesses, non-profits, education and athletic programs, and other community service organizations.

We invest in efforts to conserve the planet’s natural resources to address climate change and its adverse effect on communities.

Earth’s natural resources are being depleted at alarming rates, largely due to increasing populations and consumption. Alongside this, pollution and effects of climate change further burden our environment and society. Those who are most vulnerable to these issues are poorer populations, particularly in developing countries. Addressing this challenge will require global cooperation, across the private and public sectors, in addition to trillions of dollars in public and private investment.

The sustainable management of natural resources, decreased dependency on fossil fuels and proliferation of climate adaptation practices will reduce GHG emissions and improve environmental diversity and abundance, while meeting basic human needs and minimizing adverse effects on human health and well-being. To fill this need, we invest in intermediaries, funds, and other financing structures that provide flexible catalytic capital to managers or projects addressing climate change mitigation, climate change adaptation and sustainable management of resources.

We invest to increase access to quality, affordable healthcare to enable individuals and families to learn, work, and thrive.

Access to quality, affordable healthcare is a universally acknowledged human right. A lack of access prevents individuals from being healthy, productive members of society and stymies community development. Many countries lack the physical infrastructure necessary for adequate health services delivery and have less than one physician available for every 1,000 individuals. Because of this, healthcare continues to be a top concern globally, especially in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.

We are focused on providing greater access to debt capital for organizations seeking to grow their capacity to provide quality, affordable health services to lower and middle income populations. We invest in intermediaries and funds that are financing healthcare projects and facilities around the world.

We invest to improve access to finance so more individuals around the world can meet their household and business needs.

Around three billion people across the world have little or no access to formal financial services, yet financial services are one of the most powerful tools for reducing poverty and enabling economic growth. Microfinance seeks to provide individuals and businesses with access to useful and affordable financial products and services, often offering products that extend beyond microcredit. Supporting micro-entrepreneurs and small businesses, those that form the foundation of economies around the world, is now more important than ever. While many micro-enterprises are hurting as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and related lockdowns, these same businesses will ultimately form the basis of a strong economic and social recovery.

While the microfinance market has matured and can often access capital from traditional sources, we believe that there are still ways our capital can increase financial inclusion for people living in poverty through innovations that leverage existing platforms. We invest in microfinance institutions that engage in innovation in 1) financial products, 2) services and processes, which can include credit, insurance, payment systems, savings, and 3) financial education.

We provide financing to expand renewable energy solutions around the world, while improving access to energy, air quality, and health.

Increased access to efficient and affordable clean energy creates opportunities for businesses and communities to grow in a sustainable way. Internationally, our strategy is focused on providing reliable access to energy, particularly for communities not connected to the grid. In the US, we work to meet the needs of intermediaries that are filling market gaps in the renewable energy sector. We pursue cross-sector opportunities to increase clean energy access and affordability for underserved communities across the US, often with community development and affordable housing partners.

We invest in small business as the engine of inclusive economic growth.

Small and medium-sized business are the backbone of every economy. Here in the U.S., small businesses employ over 50% of our nation's workforce and have contributed more than 65% of new jobs over the past 15 years. Despite this, small businesses often lack access to traditional financial products and services, especially in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. This gap has further widened due to large scale bank consolidation and the decline of community banks (a traditional source of small business lending). Without access to capital, small businesses struggle to grow and communities miss out on the economic benefits they provide.

We invest in projects that increase food security and promote economic development through sustainable agricultural practices.

Around 70% of the world’s poor live in rural areas, where they are heavily dependent on agriculture for income, employment, and survival. Such agricultural communities face many challenges, including limited viable financial options and unpredictable weather changes. Today, climate change is contributing to crop depletion, degradation of land, and clean water limitations, all which pose serious challenges to keeping up with agricultural demand and sustaining rural livelihoods. These problems are compounded when large corporations exploit agriculture labor and unfair trade policies are put in place, which results in an unequal distribution of capital to agriculture-based communities.

By connecting farmers with more robust, consistent economic opportunities and strengthening global food supply chain systems, we can help to improve sustainable livelihoods for agricultural producers and contribute to greater global food security.
